Please Support My Campaign to Save Our Rainforests...
The Future of the Earth is In Your Hands
If strong and decisive action is not taken immediately to reverse the destruction of this vital ecosystem, the consequences will be catastrophic. The destruction of the rainforest is contributing to the acceleration of global warming. In fact, it is the belief of many scientists that the earth could very well become uninhabitable for virtually every living species, including the human race.
Long ago, the Earth had a green belt of rain forests around its middle that covered almost twelve percent of the earth's land surface. Today, the rain forest covers two percent of the earth's land surface and it is declining rapidly. Tragically, the tropical rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. According to Rainforest Action Network, more than an acre-and-a-half, which is equivalent to an area the size of two football fields is lost every second of every day. This in turn works out to an area more than twice the size of Florida that disappears every year. Therefore, if present rates of destruction continue, half our remaining rainforests will be gone by the year 2025, and by 2060 there will be no rainforests left at all.
Tropical rainforests contain over half of the Earth's plant and animal species, so it is vital that we protect their rainforest homes because without the rainforests these life forms cannot survive.
The tropical rainforest play an important role in generating oxygen for us to breathe. More than 20 percent of the world oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest. The trees and plants that form the rainforest take in vast quantities of carbon dioxide and through the process of photosynthesis, converts it into clean, breathable air. In fact, the tropical rainforests are the single greatest terrestrial source of air that we breathe.
Many indigenous people who make their homes there have been living in harmony with the rainforests for hundreds and even thousands of years, depending on it for their medicines, food and shelter. They manage to take everything they need from the forest but are careful not to destroy what cannot grow back naturally within a generation or two.
Nearly half the medicinal compounds we use every day come from plants endemic to the tropical rainforest. The U.S. National Cancer Institute has identified 3000 plants that are active against cancer cells. Seventy percent of these plants are found in the rainforest. Twenty-five percent of the active ingredients in today's cancer-fighting drugs come from organisms found only in the rainforest. If a cure for cancer or AIDS is to be found, it will most likely come from the tropical rainforests.
Massive deforestation brings with it many ugly consequences-air and water pollution, soil erosion, malaria epidemics, the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the eviction and decimation of indigenous Indian tribes, and the loss of biodiversity through extinction of plants and animals. Fewer rainforests mean less rain, less oxygen for us to breathe, and an increased threat from global warming.
If the destruction could stop now, life on Earth would be much more prolonged. If every person in the world knew about the rain forest being destroyed and the future effects, destruction would not be tolerated.
Humans cannot understand what they do not know. People who do not know what is going on do not see anything wrong with the destruction of the rain forests. Education about the rain forest needs to be spread in order for humankind to understand it.
The rain forest is a very beautiful and mystical place which is full of wonders. It has so much meaning to our world that it is hard to imagine why people would destroy it.
If every person just stopped and stepped out of their busy worlds of business and society, and would take some time to spread the word, through awareness the rainforests could be saved. Solving the rain forest problem could be one of the biggest challenges in history. It is time for humans to work together to right their wrongs. It is my wish to increase awareness, so that the rainforests may be saved.
